Our Story

Small Town Charm Meets Big City Design

The phrase "Small Town Charm Meets Big City Design" on The Lighting Studio's sign tells Susan Erwin's story in a nutshell.

After spending over twenty years working in Atlanta with engineers, architects, and interior designers on custom lighting design for major construction projects, Susan and her husband, Mike, have moved to the charming town of Senoia, Georgia and opened a lighting design studio and showroom that combines small town charm with big city design.

In the late 90's, Susan was one of the first to receive the prestigious "Lighting Certified" designation from the National Council on Qualifications for the Lighting Professions, and is currently studying to become a Certified Lighting Consultant with the American Lighting Association. While the NCQLP primarily recognizes excellence in the commercial lighting industry, the American Lighting Association is a trade association primarily representing the residential lighting industry. Its membership includes retail showrooms and lighting designers that are dedicated to providing the public with the proper application of quality residential lighting.

Susan has won international lighting awards for major projects such as New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, Georgia, the UPS headquarters in Alpharetta, Georgia, the Marriott Heathrow in Lake Mary, Florida and the Adidas hospitality facility for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. One of her most exciting current projects is a Southern Living inspired community in Columbus, Georgia that includes homes, apartments, retail, office space and a chapel. But she considers every customer's project, no matter how big or small, to be a unique opportunity to use lighting as a key design element to make their home a special and inviting place.

You can visit Susan in the showroom, or make an appointment to have her come to your home and assess your lighting needs in person. With the advent of design websites like Pinterest and Houzz, more customers are realizing the vast array of lighting styles that are available for the home. But many mistakes can be made when ordering from a website that doesn’t allow you to talk with a lighting professional. It is critical to the success of your project to work with a professional that guarantees their work. Make an appointment with us today to begin your custom lighting experience
